Sukla Das mother of two along with her husband Kanu were keen to start Muri manufacturing. Muri is one of the favourite Indian street food, evening snacks (jhalmuri is one such item) and breakfast. Demand for muri was never a problem. Modern muri-making involves an expensive electricity-powered machine. So, Kanu decided to buy the critical parts and make the machine himself.
Sukla, a resident of Malopara in West Bengal, Hooghly district, took loan fromGuptipara branch of Village Financial Services.
Sukla stocked up on rice and Kanu bought the parts and soon got the machine ready. Sukla, 33, sells muri to wholesalers and makes a net profit of around Rs 35,000 a month. Kanu, 45, helps her with the heavy work. Sukla says sales peak in winter. She has hired two local workers.
